Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey announced in a series of tweets on Wednesday that the social network would stop running political ads as of November 22..

The final policy will be communicated on November 15, Dorsey tweeted, explaining some of the nuances of the new policy. For example, ads promoting voter registration will still be allowed on the platform, Dorsey said.

Dorsey highlighted a host of issues that make political advertising a risky proposition, including algorithmic targeting, disinformation and deepfakes. It's unclear what will qualify as a “political” ad, but Dorsey noted that Twitter was stopping announcements about “issues”, even from non-candidates.

We looked at removing only candidate ads, but showing ads is a way around, ”Dorsey tweeted. “Also, it's not fair to everyone, but applicants should purchase advertisements for issues they wish to address. We stop them too. ”

Twitter's decision contrasts with the approach taken so far by Facebook. In a speech at Georgetown University in early October, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook was considering banning political ads, but felt the company shouldn't decide which speech would be. acceptable or not. In that speech, Zuckerberg also explained that Facebook was created to help with anti-war activism, or something like that. (It was really a crass way to assess the attitude of his classmates.)

Dorsey appears to be trying to respond to Zuckerberg's controversial statements by stating, "We are not credible in saying," We work hard to prevent people from playing around with our systems to spread misleading information, but if someone pays us to target and force people to see their political ad… well… they can say whatever they want! ”

Political ads aside, Twitter still has a problem with ads that promote harmful products like spyware and stalkerware. Previously, advertisements aimed at white supremacist groups escaped its advertising rules
